What types of collagen are there?

Collagen has over 28 types, of which type 1, type 2 and type 3 are the most important. Type 1 collagen makes up 90% of all collagen present. The most important collagen types are:

  • Collagen type 1 is mainly found in skin, hair, nails, bones, cartilage, connective tissue, ligaments, tendons and blood vessels.
  • Collagen type 2 is found in joints, intervertebral discs, ribs, nose, larynx and trachea.
  • Collagen type 3 is found in skin, blood vessels and tissues for wound repair.

It depends on the source of the collagen which types a collagen product contains. beef collagen contains type 1 and type 3 collagen. Fish collagen contains mainly type 1 and 2 collagen, but also contains hydroxyproline. Hydroxyproline is an amino acid and is an important component of the skin, the walls of blood vessels and other connective tissues.
