Collagen is the beauty ingredient of our time. It is impossible to imagine the beauty industry without it. Collagen and skin, what do they have to do with each other? What does collagen do for the skin? And what is the best collagen supplement for the skin? We would like to tell you more about the benefits of collagen for the skin in this article.
What is collagen?
Collagen is a very important glue-forming protein present in our body. Collagen is derived from the Greek word κολλώ (colla=glue) and also means to bind together. Our joints, bones, muscles, hair, nails, connective tissue and our skin are made of collagen. Want to know more about collagen? What does collagen do for the skin?
Collagen provides elasticity and strength to all our connective tissues, including skin, tendons, joints, cartilage and bones. Collagen fibres in the skin are important for the skin’s structure and firmness, and play an increasingly important role as we age.
Composition of the skin
First of all, let’s take a look at how our skin is constructed Our skin is made up of three layers (which are in turn made up of several layers):
- Epidermis: This skin is exposed to the sun.
- The dermis, also called the dermis: This layer gives firmness to the skin and is also the storage of collagen.
- Subcutaneous connective tissue: This layer consists of veins, blood vessels, lymph nodes, fatty tissue, etc.
Collagen in the skin
Collagen fibres are therefore found in the dermis/dermis, the layer below the epidermis. The dermis contains the fibroblasts. Fibroblasts are the most important cells of the connective tissue. These fibroblasts produce collagen, elastin, glucosamine glucans and hyaluronic acid. Basically, all the ingredients you need for healthy, tight skin. These fibroblasts connect with each other and the older you get, the worse this connection becomes, the fewer fibroblasts you have and the less collagen, elastin, GAGs and hyaluronic acid your skin produces. That’s how your skin starts to age.
Collagen decrease in the skin
Among other things, collagen is produced in our skin, where it provides firmness, elasticity, structure and hydration. Unfortunately, this natural process gradually decreases with age. After the age of 25, our bodies produce less and less collagen, which triggers the natural ageing process.
You can actually compare it to a bridge. If you have a bridge with only two pillars, the bridge will start to sag at some point. This is actually what happens in the skin when it ages, the skin slackens (collapses) and the first wrinkles appear. When you place more pillars under the skin, collagen fibres, you actually bring back the balance in the skin. This way you make sure that your skin is supported in a natural way. You can do this by taking various supplements, watching your diet or adopting a healthy lifestyle.
Collagen supplements for the skin
There are many ways to take extra collagen: collagen powders, collagen tablets, collagen drinks, collagen creams… But which collagen works best for the skin?
Collagen can be obtained from various natural sources such as fish, animals and plants. Viscollagen is the purest form of collagen. Its structure is similar to that of human skin. Within fish collagen, there are two different types:
Hydrolysed collagen uses heat, chemicals or acids to extract the collagen from the skin of the fish. This breaks down the structure of the collagen and you need a larger amount to experience results (often several grams). This form of collagen is often incorporated into collagen powders or collagen tablets, and you often need several tablets or scoops of powder a day to experience effects.
Native collagen is extracted from the skin of fish without heat, chemicals or acids, leaving the collagen structure intact. As a result, you need less collagen to experience results (from 40 mg). This form of collagen is very powerful, so you can already experience results with 1 supplement per day. Obtaining native collagen is a patented process. Skin for Skin’s fish collagen supplement is therefore the only native collagen supplement on the market.

the effect of native collagen
Because the structure of native collagen is completely intact, enzymes can easily absorb the collagen. The enzymes in the stomach cut up proteins for further transport and absorption.
What are the results of native Fish collagen
In the skin, collagen is responsible for firmness and elasticity. The skin scan below shows that after using Skin for Skin collagen, only after five days, the collagen level in the skin has visibly increased. The green dots represent our connective tissue/collagen fibres. The white dots show our collagen, blue hyaluronic acid and red and yellow are cell activity renewal. The result? A firmer, fuller, hydrated and radiant skin!
Experiences with native collagen for the skin
Rena: I have been using this product for a few years now and wouldn’t want to be without it. My hair has become a lot thicker and my skin smoother. But what I like most is that I hardly have any pain in my shoulder and hip because of osteoarthritis.
Madeleine Jonkers: My hair and skin have become so much more beautiful and better after using collagen from skin for skin. Beautiful and good Dutch product!
Nelleke: Great product 🤩 my skin looks much smoother and my frown has completely disappeared. Also my weak ankle is much less bothering me now.
Manuelle: Big fan of this product from the beginning. Strong nails, shiny and calm skin. I hardly need to apply any oil. No more flakes. The sebum production on my scalp is also reduced. Capsules are easy to swallow.
Mary: The first product of Skin for Skin that I have used for more than 2 years now. I don’t want to be without it anymore, so many benefits I experience from taking collagen! Even if it is only those nasty cold sores that I don’t have any more! (I learned from the team: lysine is the magic word, and it is in their collagen!) Very satisfied.
